Sourav Ganguly to Enter Race for Bengal Cricket’s Presidential Election

adminBy adminAugust 6, 20252 Mins Read

In a major development that could reshape the future of Bengal cricket, former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is all set to enter the race for the presidency of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). The announcement has sent ripples across the cricketing fraternity, signaling a potential return of ‘Dada’ to the state cricket administration with renewed vigor and vision.

Ganguly, who previously served as CAB president from 2015 to 2019 before taking over as BCCI chief, is expected to file his nomination later this month. Sources close to Ganguly confirmed that the move comes after growing calls from local cricket clubs and officials who believe his leadership is crucial for Bengal cricket’s revival amid stagnating performances in domestic circuits.

During his previous tenure, Ganguly was credited with modernizing CAB’s functioning and introducing structural reforms aimed at grassroots development. His return is widely seen as a step toward restoring professionalism, accountability, and long-term planning within the association.

With elections slated for mid-September, Ganguly is likely to face competition, although no other prominent candidate has formally entered the fray yet. Political backing and factional support within the CAB will be key factors in the upcoming contest.

Speaking informally to the media, a senior CAB official said, “Ganguly’s re-entry would be a game-changer. His stature, experience, and administrative acumen can uplift not only Bengal cricket but also create a ripple effect for better governance across Indian domestic cricket.”

If elected, Ganguly is expected to focus on revamping club cricket, enhancing infrastructure, and creating a more robust talent pipeline for the Bengal Ranji team — goals he has consistently advocated in the past.

Cricket fans across the state have welcomed the move, with social media buzzing with messages of support for the “Prince of Kolkata.” As the countdown to the elections begins, all eyes will be on how Ganguly charts his comeback in Bengal’s cricketing corridors of power.
