Shubman Gill Will Face His Biggest Examination in Manchester: Greg Chappell

adminBy adminJuly 19, 20252 Mins Read

India’s promising young batter, Shubman Gill, is gearing up for what former Australian captain Greg Chappell calls the “biggest examination of his career” — a high-stakes Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. The cricketing legend believes that the conditions and pressure of the upcoming match will be the ultimate test of Gill’s maturity, technique, and mental toughness.

In a column for an Australian publication, Chappell praised Gill’s natural talent and elegant strokeplay but highlighted the challenges that English conditions present. “Shubman Gill has the game, no doubt. But Manchester will challenge him in ways he hasn’t been tested before. The swing, the seam, the crowd, the expectations — it’s a cauldron,” Chappell wrote.

The match in Manchester is expected to feature a green pitch and overcast skies — perfect for England’s pace attack. With James Anderson likely playing one of his final Tests at his home ground and a resurgent Chris Woakes in the mix, Gill will need to be at his very best.

Chappell pointed out that Gill’s tendency to play away from his body could be exploited by bowlers who know how to move the ball late. “In Australia, pace and bounce test your courage. In England, it’s about survival through precision. Gill will have to adjust quickly, or the bowlers will feast,” he noted.

The 24-year-old from Punjab has had a mixed run in overseas conditions, shining in Australia but still searching for consistency in England. With Virat Kohli absent and India relying on a young middle-order, Gill will shoulder added responsibility — not just as a batter, but as a potential future leader.

Chappell, who once mentored Indian players during his coaching stint, concluded with optimism: “If Gill gets through Manchester, not just with runs but with control and composure, we’ll know he’s not just a talent — he’s the real deal.”

As India prepares for the crucial Test, all eyes will be on Gill. For him, it’s more than just another match. It’s a moment to prove that he’s ready to thrive — not just survive — at the highest level.
