PM Modi Attends Musical Performance by Ilaiyaraaja at Gangaikonda Cholapuram Fest

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a grand musical evening led by legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja at the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram festival, held amidst the stunning backdrop of the 11th-century Brihadisvara Temple. The event marked a fusion of classical heritage and cultural pride, drawing dignitaries, artists, and thousands of locals.

The festival, organized to celebrate Tamil Nadu’s rich Chola-era legacy, featured Ilaiyaraaja in a rare live performance that paid tribute to the region’s musical and architectural grandeur. The maestro mesmerized the audience with a soul-stirring symphony blending Carnatic ragas, folk rhythms, and devotional melodies—many inspired by Tamil traditions and the temple’s spiritual essence.

Addressing the gathering after the performance, PM Modi praised the “timeless contribution of Tamil culture to Indian civilization” and called Ilaiyaraaja “a true son of the soil who has brought Tamil music to global prominence.”

“This temple is not just stone and sculpture—it is a symphony in itself,” Modi said, noting the historical significance of the Chola dynasty’s capital. “When Ilaiyaraaja’s music resonates in this sacred space, it is as though history and harmony are embracing each other.”

Ilaiyaraaja, visibly moved, thanked the Prime Minister for his presence and support of the arts. “To perform at this divine site, where music once echoed through the temple halls centuries ago, is a blessing,” he said.

The event also featured classical dance recitals, traditional folk performances, and a vibrant light-and-sound show narrating the legacy of King Rajendra Chola I. The festival is part of the Centre’s initiative to promote “Iconic Heritage Sites” under the Dekho Apna Desh campaign.

PM Modi’s participation underscores the government’s focus on regional culture, unity in diversity, and preserving India’s ancient artistic traditions.
