Karan Johar Regrets Making OK Jaanu, Says He Felt Uncertain but Ignored Instincts

    July 26, 20252 Mins Read

In a rare moment of candor, filmmaker Karan Johar has admitted he regrets backing the 2017 romantic drama OK Jaanu, calling it a project where he chose to ignore his instincts despite inner doubts.

During a recent industry roundtable discussion, the producer-director of Dharma Productions reflected on the choices that shaped his career and didn’t shy away from acknowledging his missteps. “OK Jaanu is one of those films I shouldn’t have produced,” Johar confessed. “I felt uncertain about it from the start. My gut told me this wasn’t aligning with the audience’s mood at the time, but I overrode that feeling.”

OK Jaanu, a remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil hit O Kadhal Kanmani, starred Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in a contemporary tale of live-in relationships. Despite the success of the original, the Hindi version failed to recreate its magic, both critically and commercially.

Johar explained that while the idea of remaking a Mani Ratnam film was attractive on paper, the execution didn’t resonate. “We banked too much on the charm of the original without adapting it emotionally for the Hindi-speaking audience,” he said. “Looking back, I realize how important it is to respect that inner voice.”

This isn’t the first time Karan Johar has spoken openly about professional missteps. In the past, he has also critiqued some of his own directorial choices and emphasized the value of listening to one’s creative instincts. “Every mistake teaches you something,” he added. “OK Jaanu taught me to trust my gut, no matter how solid the numbers or legacy behind a story may seem.”

Though OK Jaanu didn’t leave a lasting impression, Johar’s ability to reflect and grow from past decisions only strengthens his standing as one of Bollywood’s most self-aware voices.
