Ganguly hails India favourites for Champions Trophy: Can defeat anyone

adminBy adminMarch 3, 20252 Mins Read

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed strong confidence in India’s prospects at the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, labeling them as favorites to clinch the title. Ganguly emphasized that India’s robust white-ball cricket performance positions them to overcome any opponent in the tournament.

In a recent interview, Ganguly stated, “India has won the T20 World Cup. In 2023, India was the runner-up in the 50-over World Cup. In the Champions Trophy, India will be one of the favorites and one of the contenders. How India executes everything will depend on that. India’s white-ball team is very good.”

He further highlighted India’s dominance over Pakistan in major ICC tournaments, noting that India has lost to Pakistan only once in a world tournament since 2000. Ganguly remarked, “We have dominated them for around 25 years now.”

However, Ganguly acknowledged that other teams also pose significant challenges. He identified Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan as formidable contenders, especially given the subcontinental conditions. Ganguly commented, “All the teams in the Champions Trophy are strong. It’s tough to say now. India, Australia, England, and South Africa—many teams are strong. Pakistan is also there, as the tournament is in the subcontinent. It will depend on who plays well at that time.”

The Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence on February 19, with Pakistan hosting the event. Due to political tensions, India will play all its matches in Dubai. The tournament features eight teams, divided into two groups, with India placed alongside Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. India’s campaign kicks off against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by the high-profile clash against Pakistan on February 23, both in Dubai.

Ganguly also pointed out that the playing conditions in Dubai might not be as batting-friendly as those in Pakistan, suggesting that bowlers, particularly spinners, could play a crucial role as the tournament progresses. He noted, “The wicket will not be as easy as it is in Pakistan. It’s a used wicket, and we won’t see 300-plus total scores in Dubai or Sharjah.”

With a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, India aims to capitalize on their recent successes and assert their dominance in the Champions Trophy 2025. Cricket enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the thrilling contests that this prestigious tournament promises to deliver.
