Air India Crash: Charred Remains Returned to Families After DNA Identification

adminBy adminJune 18, 20252 Mins Read

The charred remains of victims from the tragic Air India crash earlier this month have finally been returned to their families, following a painstaking DNA identification process carried out by forensic experts.

The crash, which occurred on June 4 when Air India Flight AI-217 from Mumbai to Frankfurt caught fire mid-air and made a failed emergency landing near Jaipur, claimed the lives of 78 passengers and crew members. The intense blaze left many of the bodies severely burned, making immediate identification impossible.

In a press briefing held Tuesday, officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that all bodies have now been identified using advanced DNA testing techniques. “This has been a heartbreaking and challenging process for all involved. We are grateful to the families for their patience and cooperation,” said DGCA chief Arun Mehta.

The remains were handed over to grieving relatives in somber ceremonies held at hospitals in Jaipur and New Delhi. For many, it was the first and only chance to gain some closure after nearly two harrowing weeks of uncertainty and anguish.

Sangeeta Rao, who lost her husband and 6-year-old daughter in the crash, broke down while speaking to reporters. “I waited every day for some miracle. Now I just want to take them home,” she said, holding tightly onto the urns bearing their ashes.

Officials from Air India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation were present at the handovers and offered condolences. The airline has pledged full compensation and long-term support to the victims’ families.

The final report from the crash investigation team is still awaited. Preliminary findings suggest an electrical malfunction in the cargo bay may have sparked the fire. Aviation safety watchdogs are now reviewing maintenance records and flight logs of the aircraft, a Boeing 777, to trace the exact cause.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier called the crash “a national tragedy” and ordered a full inquiry. Flags flew at half-mast across airports nationwide in honor of the victims.

As families begin funeral rites and remembrance ceremonies, India mourns the devastating loss and demands answers to ensure such a disaster never happens again.
